FEIT is a footwear brand that crafts hand sewn and constructed shoes from all natural materials. Since 2016, Alm Projects has collaborated with Tull Price, founder and head designer, on the company’s complete footwear range. We help to conceptualize each collection in addition to following each shoe through design refinement, material sourcing, and development.
The Kobe AD NXT FF is a basketball shoe made for the tragically late Kobe Bryant. Kobe had retired from the NBA when this shoe was in development (AD), but he was still very involved in the game and very particular about the performance of his footwear, requiring that each model provide a measurable improvement over the last (NXT). This particular model is the first Nike basketball shoe to contain the Fast Fit (FF) laceless system. Alm Projects helped to create a new material palette for a shoe that at the time was over budget. Utilizing layers of lightweight materials, the complex internal architecture of the shoe was celebrated while strategic use of durable materials ensured the product would withstand the rigor of Kobe's style of play. Rest in peace to a man and his daughter who are both gone entirely too soon.
LeBron works hard in the offseason, getting stronger and fine-tuning his already devastating skills. Inspired by his dedication and commitment to inclusivity, the Soldier 13 SFG combines LeBron-tested cushioning, containment and support with a wide, flexible collar and lace-free closure that lets all players get in and out of the shoe with ease.
Bounce like never before in the Zoom Rize, Nike Basketball's artfully crafted creation for the upwardly mobile. This mid-top provides containment and support up through the ankle, while an extra-large Nike Zoom Air unit under the ball of your foot redefines how responsive a shoe can be.
The "American Painters" collection applies colors from a diverse array of American paintings and applies them to classic New Balance styles. We utilized our background in color theory along with patience and respect for the color development process to channel a meaningful and unique use of color into this collection.
Almanac has and will continue to be our exploration into what a "brand" can be. It represents a collective, shared vision for how to go about acting responsibly and enjoyably. The project started 5 years ago as a reaction to our vague and broad-sweeping criticisms to the consumer goods industry which resulted in widely spotty and unactionable solutions. As we gained more experience working with both Fortune 500 companies and small "sustainable" brands we have been able to direct our critiques into pragmatic solutions. Coming mainly from a footwear background we quickly realized that there was a lack of brands working to renew secondhand footwear. Although we knew this was due to the extreme wear our shoes endure, it also presented a huge opportunity in such a large waste stream of difficult-to-recycle products that would otherwise end up poisoning the environment. Our mission now is to help extend the physical and emotional durability of existing footwear. View Case Study
The Vapor 180 is a footwear concept that demonstrates how a singlular sole unit can be utilized across a variety of shoes to serve variety of people. The design of the sole is rooted in the heritage of the Nike Air Max 180, while making use of contemporary Vapormax technology.
The New Balance Tropical 574 collection merges the organic beauty of tropical fish with a layered composite that changes color by laser etching. To bridge the organic inspiration to the digital manufacturing methods, we began with improvised drawings on paper influenced by the lion, dragon, and scorpion fish. Each of these drawings were then scanned to bitmap files and converted to points correlating to different sizes and laser temperatures. The results are objects defined by their fluidity between the digital and analog.
The Almanac brand concept circa 2017 was centered around designing product for specific global climate zones. This allowed us to identify specific problems pertinent to the terrain and weather that different parts of our world face to better provide solutions to these problems in our products. We started the design process for each of the three silhouettes by digging into the specific climate zone each was aimed toward to figure out what foot protection was needed. After solving and experimenting with the utility of the product we refined the designs to create aesthetically sustainable product that has all of the functionality of hyper-engineered outdoor footwear with a paired down aesthetic. We showcased this idea by designing three shoes: the Sift Mule, a sandal designed for the lowland subtropical environment that balances moisture management with protection, the Concrete Low and High, sneakers that can stand up to the rough surfaces in the urban temperate environment, and the Taiga Boot, a supportive boot built for the boreal taiga environment that allows for full range of motion.
The ACG Tolero is a sneaker concept that combines data mapping techniques and inspiration from the human anatomy to create a sustainable and versatile sneaker for the urban environment. The final design features a sole, insole, heel piece, and a single strap based on support bands in the foot that combine to create a 360° custom fit system. The strap pulls the sole and insole upward and around the foot, cradling it in a fixed position. This system also allows the shoe to be fully recyclable when the product’s lifespan ends as there are no adhesives used in its construction. This modularity also allows the user to adapt to the elements in true All Conditions Gear fashion: The user can wear the Tolero with no bootie as a sandal for maximum breathability while carrying the water resistant mid-cut bootie in case of more harsh weather. The high bootie and long strap can be swapped out for late afternoon comfort and compression.
The Adidas Vessels are a series of shoes influenced by collage. The collection makes use of a variety of contruction techniques and materials found throughout the history of Adidas, along with the introduction of recycled foam. The project name comes from an alignment with transportation, a reminder that shoes are vehicles, vessels for movement. Each shoe is designed based on a specific pace of movement: The Sofa is designed for rest, The Jog is designed for light runs, The Haste is designed for sprinting.
